I-43 Bridges (Hampton to Bender)

Project Overview

WisDOT is scheduled to begin preventative maintenance work to a total of nine bridges on I-43 between Hampton Avenue and Bender Road, in Milwaukee County. The project also includes reconstructing traffic signals, installing new signals, along with minor geometric modifications.

Bridges receiving rehabilitation:

  • Northbound/Southbound ramps and bridges over Silver Spring Drive (5 bridges total)
  • Port Washington Road bridge over the Milwaukee River (1 bridge)
  • Northbound/Southbound ramps and bridges over Lexington Avenue (3 bridges total)

I-43 bridges over Silver Spring Drive:

  • I-43 northbound bridge over Silver Spring Drive
  • I-43 southbound bridge over Silver Spring Drive
  • I-43 northbound exit ramp to Silver Spring Drive
  • Silver Spring Drive entrance ramp to I-43 northbound

Work scheduled:

  • Northbound and Southbound exit and entrance ramps will be closed at different stages of the project with marked detours.
  • The four bridges over Silver Spring Drive will receive deck repairs, polymer asphalt overlay, joint repairs, and steel girder painting.
  • The intersection of the I-43 southbound exit ramp and Silver Spring Drive will receive new monotube traffic signals, geometric modifications and new curb ramps.

Project Impacts:

  • BEGINNING TUESDAY, MAY 26, 2020 
    • I‐43 Northbound Exit Ramp to Silver Spring Drive East and N. Port Washington Road Closure:
      • I‐43 northbound exit ramp to Silver Spring Drive East, and N. Port Washington Road is scheduled to close long‐term (approximately 14 days) for bridge repairs over Lexington Avenue. **This portion of the ramp is scheduled to reopen the morning of Tuesday, June 9**
    • I‐43 Northbound Exit Ramp to Silver Spring Drive West and N. Port Washington Road Closure:
      • I‐43 northbound exit ramp to Silver Spring Drive West, and N. Port Washington Road is scheduled to close long‐term (approximately 30 days) for bridge repairs over Silver Spring Drive.
    • Detour: Travelers can utilize the northbound exit ramp at Hampton Avenue to N. Port Washington Road to Silver Spring Road. Travelers may also use the northbound exit ramp to Good Hope Road and take N. Port Washington Road south to Silver Spring Road.

 

  • BEGINNING FRIDAY, MAY 29, 2020
    • Silver Spring Drive entrance ramp to I‐43 Southbound Closure:
      • Silver Spring Drive entrance ramp to I‐43 southbound is scheduled to close long‐term (approximately 30 days) for bridge repairs over Lexington Avenue.
    • Detour: Travelers can use Silver Spring Drive Eastbound, to N. Port Washington Road Southbound, to Hampton Avenue Westbound to I‐43 Southbound to get around the closure.

 

  • Around early June, I-43 southbound traffic will remain in the existing two lanes through the work zone, with the third lane accessible after Lexington Boulevard.
  • Around early July, I-43 northbound traffic will be reduced to two lanes beginning at Hampton Avenue and continuing through the work zone.
  • Alternating entrance and exit ramps will be required to close temporarily throughout different stages of the project.
  • Throughout the project, there will be some temporary lane restrictions on Silver Spring Drive and Port Washington Road south of Hampton Avenue to help facilitate signal and bridge work.
