I-43 Bridge Rehabilitation Project Overview

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region will be conducting a highway project on I-43 in Brown County beginning on March 1, 2021. This project will have significant traffic impacts. We want to keep you updated on project scope, schedule and traffic impacts. Please review this website for project details. Project Location

  • I-43 from WIS 172 to Webster Ave. in Brown County. Work will also take place at the Atkinson Drive/I-43 ramps in Brown County

Project Improvements

Work will include construction of concrete overlays on bridge deck on I-43 and ramp bridges at WIS 54/57 interchange and Webster Street. Painting will occur on various bridges.

  • Concrete overlays of bridges on mainline I-43 and I-43 ramps
  • Reconstruction of I-43 shoulders during nightly closures for 16 calendar days
  • Painting of bridges on I-43 mainline
  • Construction of a sign bridge at the I-43 off-ramp to WIS 54/57 north/east

This project will be constructed from July 6, 2020 through October 2021 in multiple stages with multiple traffic impacts.

  • I-43 will always remain open in both directions.
    • I-43 will have long-term and short-term single lane closures that will impact traffic.
  • Numerous I-43 ramps will be closed at various times.
    • Ramp closures will have signed detours.
  • Bridge painting will occur anytime during construction in 2021.
    • Bridge painting will have shoulder and/or single lane closures.

Stage 1- Summer/Fall 2020 (Completed)

There will be various single lane closures on northbound and southbound I-43 throughout the project.  The following ramps will also have closures:

  • Southbound I-43 to northbound WIS 54/57 will be closed beginning in late July for approximately one month. Completed
  • Northbound I-43 to southbound WIS 57 will be closed beginning in late July for approximately one month. Completed.
  • Northbound I-43 off-ramp to Webster Avenue will be closed on August 27, 2020 for 35 days. Completed.
  • Westbound Webster Avenue on-ramp to I-43 will be closed on September 8, 2020 through November 2020. Completed.
  • Northbound WIS 54/57 to southbound I-43 ramp will be closed on Sept 8, 2020 through early November 2020. Completed.

Stage 2 – Spring 2021 (Completed)

Lane and ramp closures begin on March 1, 2021 at the following locations:

  • Northbound and southbound I-43 between Mason St. to Danz Ave. reduced to a single lane. Completed.
  • Northbound I-43 to northbound WIS 57 ramp OPEN, but will CLOSE for 2 days on May 24 and May 25, 2021. Completed
    • Detour: Northbound I-43 traffic should continue north and exit at Webster Avenue. Take Webster Avenue west  to southbound I-43 and follow southbound I-43 to off-ramp east onto northbound WIS 54/57. Completed.
  • Northbound WIS 57 to northbound I-43 ramp  closed until to May 27, 2021. Completed
        • Detour: Northbound WIS 54/57 traffic should continue northbound on WIS 54/57, turn north onto Nicolet Drive, turn west onto WIS 54/57 southbound, continue to I-43 on-ramp. Completed.

Overhead sign bridge (on-ramp to eastbound WIS 54/northbound WIS 57 will be completed by May 27, 2021. Completed

Stage 3 – Summer 2021 (Completed)

  • I-43 southbound over Sturgeon Bay Road – expected to be completed by June 17, 2021 Completed
    • Complete inside half of concrete overlay
  • I-43 southbound over northbound WIS 54/57 –  expected to be completed by June 17, 2021 Completed
    • Complete inside half of concrete overlay

Other work prior to October 1, 2021 (complete)

  • Bridge painting (twelve bridges) will be done between mid-May 2021 and October 1, 2021 Completed
  • Complete wingwall repairs to two culverts by October 1, 2021
