Project Details
This WisDOT project will construct three (3) new noise barriers along I-894 in Milwaukee County.
These noise walls will be built:
- Between 76th Street and 68th Street
- Between 68th Street and 60th Street
- Between 51st Street and Loomis Road
These noise barriers will be located on the south side of the interstate.

Traffic Impacts:
- Long-term closure of the 76th Street entrance ramps to eastbound I-894.
- Long-term closure of the eastbound I-894 exit ramp to 60th Street.
- Long-term eastbound I-894 exit ramp closure to Loomis Road.
- Note: long-term closures of the I-894 eastbound exit ramps to 60th Street and Loomis Road will not occur simultaneously
- Long-term outside shoulder closure along I-894.
- Overnight lane and ramp closures along eastbound I-894 between 76th Street and Loomis Road.
- Long-term outside shoulder closure on 68th street at I-894.
Schedule:
Construction on the new noise walls is scheduled to begin in mid-July 2025 and be completed by summer 2026. All work is weather dependent and subject to change.
Noise barrier process:
These barriers are being built as part of a $7 million line item included in the 2023-25 State Budget. The budget defined the limits of the project area along I-894 from Loomis Rd to 76th St.
A noise analysis was completed, and cost estimates developed. After determining which barriers were most cost effective, benefited receptors are given the opportunity to vote on the barrier which benefits their property.
The barrier must receive a vote of support from a simple majority of all votes cast by the adjacent landowners and residents of “benefited receptors”. (To qualify as a benefited receptor, the property must have an eight-decibel reduction from the noise barrier.)
If support for the barrier is affirmed, the barrier will be installed to minimize noise impacts.
