WIS 54/Maple Drive Intersection

Plover, Portage County

Project Overview

Location

WIS 54/Maple Drive intersection, in the village of Plover, Portage County.

Overview

This intersection had a higher-than-average crash rate and required geometric changes to improve safety. Speed, traffic volumes, and large truck volumes were also contributing factors to the safety concerns at this location.

During the design process, we evaluated three improvement alternatives:

  • Limited access to Maple Drive
  • Full access to Maple Drive with protected right and left-turn bays
  • A single lane roundabout

Following extensive coordination with local officials and public outreach efforts, a single lane roundabout was chosen as the preferred alternative. The roundabout is designed to accommodate oversize and overweight vehicles. It also includes improved bicycle and pedestrian accommodations between Maple Drive and the WIS 54/Business 51/County B intersection.

Traffic impacts/Detours

  • Work began on May 4, 2015.
  • Crews constructed northbound and southbound auxiliary right-turn lanes and temporary traffic signals at the I-39/County B interchange.
  • On June 4, crews closed WIS 54 to all traffic between Vineyard Drive and Short Drive. Maple Drive is closed between Rosalie Parkway and Mecca Drive.
    • Traffic is detoured via County B and I-39
  • The roundabout opened on Wednesday, September 2.
