WIS 124 Chippewa Falls Bridge

Chippewa County

Project Overview

WisDOT began an improvement project on WIS 124 northbound and southbound bridges in April 2017. This improvement project includes removing deteriorated concrete pavement, resurfacing the Summit Avenue intersection with an asphaltic surface, bridge deck repairs, work on several bridge footings, and a polymer overlay. The project also includes improvements to curb and gutter, beam guard, signing and pavement marking. As the project progressed, WisDOT became aware of unexpected deficiencies of the bridge foundation at pier 3 on the northbound structure. After mobilizing a drill crew and completing a comprehensive investigation, further structural concerns were identified, leading to the closure of the northbound structure in June 2017.

Repairs to the northbound structure began in September 2017 and have continued through the winter. During this work, the northbound structure has remained closed and traffic has continued to run bi-directional on the southbound bridge. Work includes:

  • Reinforce the footings on Pier 3 and Pier 5 to address deteriorating concrete and strengthen weight bearing capacity.

After completion of the northbound pier repairs, traffic will be placed on the northbound structure and continue bi-directional while the bridge deck repair and polymer overlay are completed on the southbound bridge.

The southbound bridge repairs and the repair and resurface of Summit Avenue intersection is estimated for completion by late July 2018.
