Project Overview

Page last updated: May 20, 2022

In early December 2021, the County U bridge over southbound US 51 was struck and damaged by an over-height vehicle. The North Central Region Bridge Engineer conducted an initial inspection that same day. Further inspection of the bridge concluded that four damaged girders are damaged enough that they need to be replaced. Several other girders have superficial damage, but do not need to be replaced. The outside driving lane of eastbound County U over the structure (over the damaged area) is currently closed. The lane closure will remain in place until the bridge can be repaired.

The purpose of the project is to repair the bridge over US 51 so that all lanes may be safely reopened to traffic.

Proposed improvements

  • Remove part of the existing deck of the bridge carrying the eastbound lanes of Marathon County U over southbound US 51.
  • Replace four damaged bridge girders, and conduct minor repairs on several others
  • Install new girders and replace the deck in the removed area
