Project Details
This WisDOT project will make improvements to approximately 6.5 miles of I-41/I-43/I-94/I-894, through the Mitchell Interchange, in Milwaukee County. The project limits are between Rawson Avenue to the south, Howard Avenue to the north, and 35th Street to the west.
2026 Construction:
Work on this project is scheduled to resume on late March 2026. See Project Updates page for more information.
2026 Traffic Impacts:
The majority of the work will be completed during overnight hours with lane and ramp closures. Some work will require traffic impacts to weekend and daily traffic:
- Extended weekend full closures
- One weekend full closure of the southbound I-43/94 to westbound I-894 system ramp
- One weekend full closure of the eastbound I-894 to northbound I-43/94 system ramp
- One weekend full closure of the I-94/43 northbound collector distributer lanes between College Avenue and Layton Avenue
- One weekend full closure of the I-94/43 southbound collector distributor lanes between Layton Avenue and College Avenue
Access to local businesses and residences will be maintained at all times.
Project Improvements:
This project will improve pavement conditions and ride quality and include structural maintenance. The entire corridor will be resurfaced with asphalt. Additional improvements include:
- Milling and patching
- Replace High Friction Surface Treatments
- Joint maintenance at bridge approaches
- Repairs to retaining walls
- Various improvements to College Avenue park and ride lots
- Various drainage improvements
- New pavement markings and signing
Schedule:
Work is scheduled to begin in early September 2025 and be completed by fall 2026. Work was paused during the winter months and is resuming in late March 2026.
