Project purpose and need
I-43 is experiencing pavement cracking and minor deterioration of the bridge structures. The sign bridges, guardrail, and fencing have reached the end of its service life.
Project location
The project will take place on 10 miles of I-43 from Wilson/Lima Road in the town of Wilson to WIS 42 in the town of Sheboygan, Sheboygan County. The project also passes through the city of Sheboygan and village of Kohler.

WisDOT has created a public handout for this project. Please download for those without access to this website.
Project improvements
This is a resurfacing-level project. Project improvements include:
- Remove 3” of the deteriorated pavement surface and overlay with 3 ¾” of new asphalt pavement
- Bridge maintenance
- Sign bridge replacement
- Guardrail replacement
- Fencing replacement
- Note: The fence replacement will extend beyond the project limits to the south County Line.
Anticipated benefits
- This project will significantly extend the service life of the pavement and associated structures for many additional years by addressing current deterioration through milling and overlaying with new asphalt, along with targeted bridge maintenance and replacements of aging sign bridges, guardrails, and fencing.
- This proactive rehabilitation will reduce long-term maintenance costs by preventing more severe future damage and the need for costly full reconstructions.
- Motorists will experience smoother, more comfortable driving conditions on refreshed pavement, while the updated safety features—such as modern guardrails and sign structures—enhance overall roadway safety by better protecting against roadside hazards, improving driver navigation, and structural integrity.
Schedule and construction staging
Construction begins March 2 with tree clearing and right-of-way fencing. Structure work begins mid-March.

Temporary business signing
Temporary business signing may be placed by filling out a WisDOT business signing permit. All temporary business signing needs approval via the permit before placement to ensure it is in a safe location and does not pose a visual distraction or traffic hazard. The temporary business signing permit is free. Costs associated with creating the temporary sign are the responsibility of the business.
- Click here for WisDOT’s temporary business signing instructions and a link to a fillable-form WORD application for the permit.
- You can also request a permit application from WisDOT Project Manager Nicholas Uitenbroek via email or phone (nicholas.uitenbroek@dot.wi.gov or 920-492-5660).
- Please email Nick or mail the permit application to Nicholas Uitenbroek, WisDOT NE Region, 944 Vanderperren Way, Green Bay, WI 54304.
Business Resource: WisDOT’s In This Together program
WisDOT recognizes businesses located in work zones or impacted by detour routes have special needs. WisDOT’s In This Together program is offered to business, organizations and
community leaders as an idea source as they plan for road construction in their area. It includes promotional examples, case studies and a specially designed information for businesses regarding planning ahead, keeping customers informed, and temporary business signage during road closures.
