Project Location

This is a rehabilitation project on I-41 over Lake Butte des Mort in Winnebago County.

Project Scope

The improvements include:

  • Remove and replace structure approaches for northbound and southbound I-41 bridges over main channel of Lake Butte des Morts (B-70-265 and B-70-266)
  • Replace and relocate a roughly 100-foot section of cable barrier on the west side of I-41 near the US 45 interchange
  • Move and replace existing safety and weight enforcement facilities (SWEF) along I-41 near the northern shore of Lake Butte des Morts

Schedule

Construction: May 28, 2024 to October 1, 2024

Traffic Impacts

  • Impacts to I-41 mainline traffic include:
    • Both directions of I-41 will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes across Lake Butte des Morts
  • Impacts to I-41 interchange ramps include:
    • Southbound I-41 on-ramp ramp from US 45 will be closed for the majority of the project
    • Detour: US 45 to WIS 21 to I-41
  • Significant traffic impacts are anticipated throughout the entire project and motorists are advised to use alternate routes whenever possible.
  • Note: During EAA AirVenture, the project will be suspended with all lanes and ramps open to traffic.

Project Benefit

The benefit of this project is to extend the life of I-41 bridges and upgrade the weight enforcement facilities along this important corridor.

Temporary Business Signing and Business Resources

Temporary business signing may be placed during the detoured portion of the project by filling out a WisDOT business signing permit. All temporary business signing needs approval via the permit before placement to ensure it is in a safe location and do not pose a visual distraction or traffic hazard.

The temporary business signing permit is free. Costs associated with creating the temporary sign are the responsibility of the business. The permit is available as a fillable-form WORD document or PDF below, or you can request one from the project contacts below.
