WIS 57 - Door County

Intersection Improvements

Project Overview

Location of intersection work on WIS 57The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is conducting a safety improvement project at the three WIS 57 intersections located at County H, Stone Road, and Cloverleaf Road in Door County in 2025.

  • NOTICE: Construction is expected to begin April 28, 2025.

Project location
This project is located at three intersections along WIS 57 in Door County.

Project purpose and need

There is a history of right-angle crashes at these intersections. This work is intended to improve safety at the intersections while maintaining acceptable traffic operations at each intersection. For crash data, please refer to the WIS 57 design website. Due to the severity and number of crashes, this project qualified for federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funding.

Project improvements – RCUTS

WisDOT will construct Reduced Conflict U-Turns (RCUTs) at existing WIS 57 intersections with County H and Stone Road. The RCUT intersection reduces the number and type of conflict points and simplifies decision-making, while still allowing all turning movements to be made at the intersection. By eliminating the minor road crossing movement, the RCUT intersections are expected to decrease right-angle collisions and the severity of crashes at the intersection. Project improvements include:

  • Reconstructing the County H and Stone Road intersections with RCUTs including slotted right and left turn lanes added at each WIS 57 approach and U-Turns added along each WIS 57 approach to replace the minor road crossing movement.
  • Reconstructing the Cloverleaf Road intersection to consist of right-in and right-out and left-in movements.
    • Intersection improvements will remove left turns and crossing maneuvers from Cloverleaf Road.
  • Curb and gutter including median islands
  • Culvert and storm sewer modifications, lighting and pavement markings

Schedule

Work is expected to begin April 28, 2025, and finish before the 2025 Labor Day weekend.

Traffic impacts

WIS 57 will remain open to a minimum of one through travel lane in each direction at all times.

Temporary business signing

If business access is impacted by a closure or detour, temporary business signing may be placed by filling out a WisDOT business signing permit. All temporary business signing needs approval via the permit before placement to ensure it is in a safe location and does not pose a visual distraction or traffic hazard. The temporary business signing permit is free. Costs associated with creating the temporary sign are the responsibility of the business.

Business Resource: WisDOT’s In This Together program

WisDOT recognizes businesses located in work zones or impacted by detour routes have special needs. WisDOT’s In This Together program is offered to businesses, organizations, and community leaders as an idea source as they plan for road construction in their area. It includes promotional examples, case studies, and a specially designed Business Coordination Guide with information on:
