Project Overview
This 511 construction webpage details work beginning May 26, 2026, on WIS 32 in Calumet County.
- NOTE: There will be a 10-working-day closure (May 26 to June 8) of the highway at the beginning of the project.
Location
The project will take place on WIS 32 from the New Holstein city limit to the Chilton city limit and in the towns of Charlestown and New Holstein.
Purpose and need
The purpose of the project is to address deteriorating pavement conditions, deteriorating drainage, and to improve the riding surface.
Project improvements
This is a resurfacing-level project. Project improvements include:
- Resurfacing includes a 3.5-inch mill and overlay of the existing asphalt pavement
- Removal and replacement of four cattle pass with culvert pipes
- Replace one culvert pipe
- Pavement markings
Anticipated benefits
The upgraded corridor will maintain reliable access between New Holstein and Chilton, supporting local commerce, agriculture, and daily travel with minimal long-term disruption.
- Smoother, more comfortable ride quality: Milling and overlaying the existing pavement with new asphalt will eliminate deterioration and provide a uniform, high-quality driving surface for motorists, reducing vehicle wear and improving overall driving comfort along the 4.5-mile corridor.
- Improved drainage and long-term pavement performance: Replacing deteriorating drainage structures (including four cattle passes converted to culvert pipe and one additional culvert replacement) will enhance water flow, reduce ponding, and protect the new pavement from moisture-related damage.
- Reduced future maintenance needs and costs: By correcting underlying pavement and drainage issues now, the project will extend the service life of the roadway and lower the frequency and expense of future repairs, providing cost savings for taxpayers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
- Enhanced safety and reliability: Fresher pavement markings combined with a smoother surface will improve visibility and vehicle handling, contributing to safer travel conditions for residents, commuters, and agricultural traffic.
- Sustained mobility and economic support – The upgraded corridor will maintain reliable access between New Holstein and Chilton, supporting local commerce, agriculture, and daily travel with minimal long-term disruption.
Schedule
This is a 35-working day contract.
- Construction is expected to begin Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and finish in mid-July, 2026.
Traffic impacts
WIS 32 will be closed and detoured to through traffic for 10 working days at the start of this project between Ford Drive and just north of Irish Road.
- May 26 to June 8: WIS 32 CLOSED and DETOURED to through traffic between Ford Drive in New Holstein to just north of Irish Road near Chilton.
- Detour: A signed detour will follow County H and County G
- View WIS 32 detour route on a map (pdf)
- WIS 32 will remain open to traffic with lane closures following this closure for the remainder of the work.
Temporary business signing and business resources
Temporary business signing may be placed during the detoured portion of the project by filling out a WisDOT business signing permit. All temporary business signing needs approval via the permit before placement to ensure it is in a safe location and does not pose a visual distraction or traffic hazard. The temporary business signing permit is free. Costs associated with creating the temporary sign are the responsibility of the business. The permit is available as a fillable-form WORD document at the webpage below:
For more information regarding temporary signing, plus tips and tools for businesses impacted by highway construction, please visit WisDOT’s “In This Together” business resource website. The In This Together program is offered to business and community leaders as an idea source as they plan for road construction in their area.
