2018 Northeast Region Construction Preview

Northeast Wisconsin highway construction projects taking place in 2018

Wondering where highway construction is taking place in 2018 and how it will impact you? Look no further than here! Below is a listing of ALL 2018 construction projects under the authority of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region. The list includes state projects on interstates, the United States highway system, and the Wisconsin state highway system. The Northeast Region includes the counties of Brown, Calumet, Door, Fond du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, Marinette, Oconto, Outagamie, Sheboygan, and Winnebago. Projects are listed by county below.

Along with this annual advisory, we also have project updates on ALL active construction project for you. The weekly update is distributed every Friday, from April to November, and includes current construction activities and traffic impacts.

NORTHEAST REGION MUTIPLE-COUNTY PROJECTS

Various Deck Sealing Projects

Location/limits: Brown, Outagamie, Winnebago, Calumet, Fond du Lac counties.

Construction schedule: Summer 2018

Description of work: Work involves the sealing of concrete bridge decks to preserve and extend the deck life. Highways include WIS 172, WIS 29, WIS 57, WIS 54, WIS 96, US 151, WIS 441, and WIS 26 in the counties of Brown, Calumet, Fond du Lac, Outagamie and Winnebago.

Traffic impacts: Shoulder and lane closures and/or flagging operations.

Sign Bridge Repair and Replacement

Location/limits: Various highways in Brown, Calumet, Outagamie, Winnebago

Construction Schedule: Summer 2018

Description of work: Work includes minor repair of existing sign bridges in Brown, Calumet, Outagamie, and Winnebago counties.

Traffic impacts: Some repairs will require short-term shoulder or lane closures. Time restrictions and message boards will be utilized for some lane closures.

BROWN COUNTY

US 41 Resurfacing

Location/limits: US 41 from Lineville Road to Norfield Road within the village of Suamico

Length of project: 4.75 miles

Construction schedule: March 2018 to mid-November 2018

Description of work: US 41/US 141 resurfacing, pavement repairs, asphalt pavement, and shoulder grading. Bridge deck rehabilitation at US 41/US 141 over Riverside Drive, US 41/US 141 over County B, US 41/US 141 over CN Railroad, Harbor Lights Road over US 41/US 141, Norfield Road over US 41/US 141. Project also includes culvert repairs/replacements, median cable guard installation, beamguard replacement and new signing and pavement markings.

Traffic impacts: Motorists will encounter a southbound US-41 long-term lane closure from County B to Norfield Road (March to late May 2018), off-peak lane closures, and short-term (overnight) full closures for bridge demolition. Temporary crossovers and temporary lane widening will allow two lanes of traffic to be maintained in both northbound and southbound directions from late May to project finish. Please expect some delays, especially during peak-travel time such as morning and evening rush hour or special events. No lane closures will take place during Packer gameday travel periods. US 41 & County B Interchange Reconstruction

Location/limits: US 41 and County B Interchange in the village of Suamico

Length of project: 0.31 miles

Construction schedule: Mid-May 2018 to mid-August 2018

Description of work: Reconstruction of the US 41 and County B interchange to address safety and capacity issues, create duel left-turn lanes for the northbound US 41/US 141 off-ramp to westbound County B, create dual thru-lanes on westbound County B, bring all ramp terminal turn lanes and tapers up to current standards, construct new signals at the interchange ramp terminals, reconstruct all interchange pavement, install new storm sewer, construct a retaining wall on the north side of County B under the US 41/US 141 bridge structures, reconstruct the CN railroad crossing on County B between Side Street & Deerfield Lane, new base course, pavement, signing and pavement markings.

Traffic impacts:

May 14, 2018 to June 15, 2018:

  • FULL CLOSURE of US 41/US 141 and County B interchange.
    • All interchange on and off-ramps closed.

June 15, 2018 to July 13, 2018:

  • PARTIAL CLOSURE of US 41/US 141 and County B interchange
    • Southbound US 41/US 141 on and off-ramps at County B REMAIN CLOSED
    • Northbound US 41/US 141 on and off-ramp OPEN

May 14, 2018 to July 13, 2018:

  • County B from Velp Avenue to Veterans Avenue CLOSED
  • County B east of the northbound US 41 off-ramp will OPEN following the opening of the northbound ramps on June 15.
  • County B west of the northbound US 41 off-ramp will remain CLOSED through July 13.

July 13, 2018 to mid-August:

  • All interchange ramps OPEN.
  • Various lane and shoulder closures for retaining wall work.

Detours:

US 41 traffic seeking westbound County B: US 41 to County M (Lineville Road) to County HS (Velp Ave.) to westbound County B

  • Detour will be in place from May 14, 2018 to July 13, 2018

US 41 traffic seeking eastbound County B: US 41 to County M (Lineville Road) to County J (Lakeview Dr.) to eastbound County B.

  • Detour will be in place from May 14 to June 15, 2018
  • After June 15, the northbound US 41/US 141 on and -off ramps will remain open, as will County B from the US 41 northbound ramp terminals to east.

County B traffic seeking US 41 will be directed to use the County M (Lineville Road) interchange south of the US 41/County B interchange to enter US 41 via County HS (Velp Ave.) or County J (Lakeview Dr.).

WIS 172/Fox River Bridge Painting

Location/limits: WIS 172 Bridge over the Fox River in the village of Ashwaubenon and Allouez

Length of project: 0.75 Miles

Construction schedule: May 2018 to Nov 2019 (no work in winter months)

Description of work: Blasting and painting of steel girders under the bridge. Temporary causeway installed in the river to allow equipment access to barges.

Traffic impacts: Off-peak lane closures on WIS 172 and WIS 57 (Riverside Drive). Shoulder closures on WIS 172. Flagging operations and various night closures of the Fox River Recreational Trail and Ashwaubomay Recreational Trail directly under the bridge. Boat traffic should be mindful of construction barge traffic and containment systems hanging below the bridge girders.

WIS 29 Resurfacing

Location/limits: WIS 29 from Main Street (US 141) intersection to the Brown/Kewaunee County line

Construction schedule:  August 2017 to November 2017 (culvert replacement complete); May 2018 to July 2018 (resurfacing)

Length of project: 7.8 miles

Description of work:  The project in 2018 includes resurfacing 7.8 miles of WIS 29 from just east of the Main Street (US 141) intersection in Bellevue to the east Brown County line. The project will use cold-in-place recycling prior to the new pavement surface being placed. 2018 work also includes minor curb and gutter repair and new pavement markings and signs. Fifteen culverts were replaced in 2017 as part of this project.

Traffic impacts: The project will be constructed under traffic. During working hours, traffic may be reduced to one lane using flagging operations. Due to the length of the work zone during the cold-in-place recycling operations, there will be a pilot car on site assisting with the flagging by guiding traffic through the work zone at a consistent speed.

BROWN and OUTAGAIME COUNTIES

 

I-41 Resurfacing in 2017 Finishing Work

Location/limits: County J in Outagamie County to Orange Lane in Brown County

Length of project: 10.35 miles

Construction schedule: Feb. 20, 2017 to July 2018

Description of work: Work in 2018 will consist of installation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (traffic cameras), median cable guard, and high friction surface treatments of bridge decks. All other work was completed in 2017.

Traffic impacts: Off-peak lane closures and various shoulder closures.

BROWN AND SHAWANO COUNTIES

 

WIS 29 and WIS 156 improvements

Location/limits: WIS 156 (Shawano Co.) from WIS 55 to WIS 29, Old 29 Drive from WIS 156 to County Y (Brown Co.), and WIS 29 at WIS 156 (town of Pittsfield)

Length of project: 4 miles

Construction schedule: July 2017 to November 2018 (two construction seasons)

Description of work: The project includes construction of a new overpass at WIS 29/St. Augustine Road (ongoing), relocation of WIS 156 onto Old 29 Drive to the WIS 29/32 interchange (complete), resurfacing of WIS 156 and Old 29 Drive (ongoing), reconstructing the intersection of County Y and Old 29 Drive and add turn lanes (complete), construction of three new box culverts, and new signing and pavement marking (ongoing).

Traffic impacts in 2018: WIS 29 lane and shoulder closures. St. Augustine Road south of Cottonwood will remain closed during the project. WIS 156 will close to thru traffic between WIS 55 and WIS 29.

Detour: WIS 156 detoured WIS 55 to WIS 29.

CALUMET COUNTY

 

WIS 55 Resurfacing

Location/limits: WIS 55 from US 151 to WIS 114 in the village of Sherwood

Length of project: 11.60 miles

Construction schedule:  August 2018 to October 2018

Description of work: Work includes a mill and overlay of the existing asphalt surface, permanent signing, pavement marking, shoulder and centerline rumble strips, shouldering, and beam guard adjustments. Work within village of Stockbridge includes a mill and overlay of the existing asphalt surface, curb and gutter repairs and pedestrian curb ramp improvements.

Traffic impacts: WIS 55 will remain open to traffic with single lane closures and flagging operations. Local access to business and properties will be maintained.

US 151 Resurfacing

Location/limits: US 151 from the city of Chilton to the Calumet/Fond du Lac County line

Length of project: 11.87 miles

Construction schedule: August 2018 to October 2018

Description of work: Work includes a mill and overlay of the existing asphalt surface, permanent signing, pavement marking, centerline rumble strips, shouldering, and beam guard adjustments.

Traffic impacts: US 151 will remain open to traffic with single lane closures and flagging operations. Local access to business and properties will be maintained.

CALUMET and MANITOWOC COUNTIES

 

US 10 West/WIS 310 West Resurfacing

Location/limits:

  • US 10 West from the intersection of US 10 and WIS 32/57 in Forest Junction, Calumet County to the US 10/I-43 interchange in Manitowoc County (Note: No roadway work will take place in the city of Brillion or the village of Reedsville).
  • WIS 310 West from I-43 to the WIS 310/County Road R intersection in Manitowoc County.

Length of project: 19.94 miles

Construction schedule:  May 2018 to October 2018

Description of work:  Work includes a mill and overlay of the existing asphalt surface, culvert replacement, pavement marking, rumble strips, shouldering, intersection safety improvements. Work within village of Whitelaw includes concrete roadway repairs, storm sewer removal and replacement, sidewalk improvements, pavement marking and asphalt overlay.

Traffic impacts: US 10 will remain open with single lane closures and flagging operations except in the village of Whitelaw. US 10 will be closed and detoured in Whitelaw for storm sewer and concrete repairs. Local access to businesses and properties will be maintained.

Detour: Detour will follow I-43 to US 151 to County W to US 10 and vice versa.

DOOR COUNTY

 

WIS 57 Resurfacing

Location/limits: WIS 57 from County Q in Baileys Harbor to WIS 42 in Sister Bay

Construction schedule: May 2018 to June 2018

Length of project in miles: 8 miles

Description of work: This project will resurface WIS 57 in 2018, including shouldering, permanent signing, and pavement marking

Traffic impacts: WIS 57 will remain open using flagging operations when necessary. All work will be completed prior to the July 4th holiday weekend.

FOND DU LAC COUNTY

 

US 45 Resurfacing and Safety Improvements

Location/limits: US 45 from the north village of Eden limits to County V in the city of Fond du Lac.

Construction schedule: Spring 2018 to fall 2018

Length of project: 5.14 Miles

Description of work: This project includes resurfacing of US 45 in the project limits, Realignment of US 45/County H intersection, reconstruction of a vertical curve south of US 151, re-decking of the bridge over the DeNeveu Creek, Multiple culvert replacements, beamguard upgrades, centerline rumble strips, obstacle/tree removal in the clear zone, signing and pavement marking.

Traffic impacts:

US 45 south of US 151 will be CLOSED and detoured during construction.

  • Local access to businesses and residences will be provided at all times via the nearest side road.

US 45 north of US 151 will be OPEN to traffic using flagging operations during construction.

US 151 will remain OPEN except for 2 nights for bridge demolition.

Detour:

Southbound US 45: US 45 to southbound I-41 to eastbound County B to rejoin US 45

Northbound US 45: US 45 to westbound County B to northbound I-41 to rejoin US 45

US 45 Eden Reconstruction

Location/limits: Village of Eden from Elm Street to the north village limits

Schedule: Fall 2018 to fall 2019

Length of project: 0.91 Miles

Description of work: The US 45 Eden reconstruction project will fully reconstruct the portion of US 45 within the Eden village limits and 400 feet of County B. Reconstruction includes complete removal and replacement of the highway structure, including the sub-surface level. Other improvements include replacing large culvert on County Road B (Fall 2018), widening and replacing a railroad crossing at County B and removing railroad traffic signals (Fall 2018), widening the roadway 1 to 2 feet, replacing terraces in kind, replacing storm sewer, installing a bump-out at a mid-block crossing on Fond du Lac Avenue. Curb and gutter, new signing and pavement markings will also take place.

Traffic impacts: County B will be CLOSED to thru traffic in the fall of 2018. It will open in the winter, and then CLOSE again for during the 2019 construction season. US 45 will remain open in 2018, but close in 2019.

Detour: County B: US 45 to County W to County F to County V to County B.

US 151 Bridge Repair

Location/limits: County Y and US 45 bridges over US 151 in the city of Fond du Lac and the town of Lamartine.

Construction Schedule: Spring 2018 to fall 2018

Description of work: This project will replace girders damaged by over-height vehicle strikes on two bridges over US 151. The US 45 bridge in the city of Fond du Lac will have a girder replaced, the deck repaired and an epoxy overlay placed on the deck. The County Y bridge in the town of Lamartine will have two girders replaced, the deck repaired and an epoxy overlay.

Traffic Impacts: US 45 will be CLOSED and detoured. County Y will be CLOSED and no detoured will be posted. US 151 will remain open to traffic except for a short-term (two nights), full closure for bridge demolition. This is expected for two nights at each structure. There will be rolling road blocks for setting the girders.

Detour:

US 45 detour: County B to I-41.

US 151 detour: US 151 to WIS 26 to I-41.

US 151 detour at US 45: US 151 to WIS 23 to I-41.

Virgin Creek Box Culvert

Location/limits: Structure at Virgin Creek between US 45 and Town Hall Road

Schedule: Summer 2018 to fall 2018

Length of project: .085 Miles

Description of work: This project will reconstruct the existing box culvert at Virgin Creek. In addition to replacing the box culvert, the horizontal curve will be reconstructed and the slopes will be flattened.  Town Hall Road will become a private drive from US 45.

Traffic Impacts: WIS 67 will be closed to through traffic and detoured. Town Hall Road will permanently close.

Detour: WIS 67 detour: County SS to US 45 to WIS 67

WIS 23 Resurfacing

Location/limits: WIS 23 from Lafayette Street in the village of Rosendale to Townline Road in the city of Fond du Lac.

Length of project:  8.24 miles

Construction schedule:  June 2018 to October 2018

Description of work:  This project will resurface WIS 23 and overlay the existing bridge over the Fond du Lac River. Other work includes concrete pavement repair and replacement, culvert pipe replacements, curb ramp and storm sewer repairs, signing, and pavement marking.

Traffic impacts: WIS 23 will be detoured for construction on the bridge, culvert replacements, and concrete base patching for a maximum of 35 working days. During resurfacing operations, WIS 23 will remain open to traffic using lane closures and flagging as needed.

Detour: Eastbound WIS 23 will be rerouted north on WIS 26, then south on I-41, back to WIS 23. Westbound WIS 23 will follow the reverse path of the eastbound detour.

KEWAUNEE COUNTY


WIS 42 Resurfacing and Deck Rehabilitation

Location/limits: City of Kewaunee from Miller Street to Duvall Street

Length of project: 1 mile

Construction schedule: End of July 2018 to October 2018

Description of work: This project includes resurfacing of WIS 42 in the city of Kewaunee, including the rehabilitation, concrete overlays, and beamguard replacement on the existing bridges over the Kewaunee River and Ahnapee State Trail. Sidewalk will be extended along the east side of WIS 42 south to Harbor Park. Spot locations of sidewalk will also be constructed along the west side of WIS 42 between Miller Street and the Kewaunee River. Minor storm sewer improvements will take place.

Traffic impacts: WIS 42 will remain open with flagging operations during construction. Temporary signals will be in place with single-lane traffic over the bridges. Pedestrian access will be maintained over the Kewaunee River bridge. Miller Street may be closed during construction to facilitate the city’s storm sewer installation.

MANITOWOC COUNTY/SHEBOYGAN COUNTIES

 

I-43 Median Cable Guard Installation

Location/limits: Wilson Lima Road in Manitowoc County to Fischer Creek in Sheboygan County.

Length of project: 6.2 miles

Construction schedule:  May 2018 to end of August 2018

Description of work:  This project will install median cable guard to prevent crossover crashes and apply a friction surface treatment on the I-43/County EE overpass.

Traffic impacts: Single lane closures at various times during construction.

MARINETTE COUNTY

 

Ogden Street Bridge Upgrades and Painting

Location/limits: Ogden Street to First Street in Marinette

Construction schedule: June 2017 to March 31, 2018

Length of project: Ogden Street Bridge

Description of work: Work on the Ogden Street Bridge will include machinery upgrades (complete), concrete repairs (complete), and structural steel painting (2018).

Traffic impacts: Traffic will be detoured during winter painting.

Detour: Northbound detour route: Ogden St. to Hosmer St., Hosmer St. to Main St., Main St. to Pierce Ave., Pierce Ave. to US 41 (Bridge St.), US 41 (Bridge St.) to 10th Ave., 10th Ave. to 10th St., 10th St. to 4th Ave., 4th Ave. (Wells Ave) to 3rd St., 3rd St. to 2nd Ave., 2nd Ave. to 1st St. (reverse for southbound).

  • Changeable message signs placed prior to Cleveland Avenue in Marinette will inform trucks to remain on US 41 through Marinette, WI to Menominee, MI on the existing truck route.
  • Changeable message signs placed prior to 7th Street in Menominee, MI will inform trucks to remain on US 41 through Menominee, MI to Marinette, WI on the existing truck route.

OCONTO COUNTY

 

US 41 Median Cable Guard Installation

Location/limits: US 41 through the towns of Little Suamico, Abrams and Oconto.

Length of project: 11.47 miles

Construction start/finish schedule: 85 calendar day project during the 2018 construction season. Specific dates TBA.

Description of work: Cable guard installation along US 41. Repave the shoulders of the US 41/US 141 interchange.

Traffic impacts: Majority of project will be completed under traffic via lane closures during off-peak hours. Ramp closures will take place within the US 41/US 141 interchange for shoulder work.

OUTAGAMIE COUNTY

 

WIS 55 (Delanglade Street) Kaukauna Reconstruction

Location/Limits: WIS 55/Delanglade Street in city of Kaukauna from I-41 to Lawe Street

Length of project: 1.16 miles

Construction schedule: March 2018 to late October 2018

Description of work: The project consists of a full reconstruction of WIS 55 (Delanglade Street) from I-41 to Lawe Street in the city of Kaukauna. Improvements will include roundabouts at the intersections of I-41 ramps, Maloney/Gertrude, and County OO. New traffic signals will be installed at County J/WIS 55/WIS 96, and bike/pedestrian accommodations will be added throughout the project limits along WIS 55. Other work includes storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, sidewalks, retaining walls, street lighting, and incidentals.

Traffic impacts: WIS 55 traffic will be CLOSED and detoured in three main stages as listed below with tentative timelines. Construction will be staged in manner to provide business and residential access throughout construction. Dates are tentative. Please see project website for current traffic impacts.

Stage 1: March to end of May 2018

  • WIS 55 will be closed to through traffic from Gertrude/Maloney Road to Lawe Street and detoured.

Stage 2: June to end of August 2018

  • The intersection of WIS 55/County OO will be reopened and used as part of the Stage 2 detour while the WIS 55/WIS 96/County J intersection is closed.
  • Work along WIS 55 will continue from Gertrude/Maloney Road to Lawe Street.

Stage 3: End of July to end of October 2018

  • The I-41/WIS 55 interchange will be closed for 90 days (I-41 will remain open to traffic).
  • Gertrude/Maloney Road will be closed during this stage.
    • Note: Gertrude/Maloney Road will be required to be OPEN within the first 40 days of the 90-day interchange closure start.

Detour:

  • Stage 1 detour: WIS 55 will be detoured via County J and County JJ.
  • Stage 2 detour: WIS 55 will be detoured via WIS 96 to Gertrude St to County OO to County J to County JJ.
  • Stage 3 detour: WIS 55 will be detoured via County OO to County J to County JJ.

Capitol Drive Overpass Rehab and Bridge Surface Treatments

Location/Limits: Capitol Drive overpass (over I-41) in town of Grand Chute; two Wisconsin Central Limited railroad bridges (over I-41) and the Maloney Road bridge in town of Grand Chute and city of Kaukauna; two overpasses on Dale Road (over US 10) in town of Dale (Winnebago County)

Construction schedule:  July 2018 to end of August 2018

Description of work: Work consists of a concrete overlay of Capitol Drive bridge and application of an epoxy/friction surface overlay on the I-41 bridges over the Wisconsin Central Limited railroad and Maloney Road and the US 10 bridges over Dale Road.

Traffic impacts:

  • Capitol Drive will be closed and detoured during rehabilitation.
  • I-41 single lane closures will be permitted from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday at the railroad and Maloney Road locations.
  • US 10 single lane closures will be permitted except for Fridays from noon to 7 p.m. for westbound traffic and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for eastbound traffic.

Detour: Capitol Drive will be detoured via North Rifle Range Road to County A.

WIS 55 Resurfacing

Location/limits: WIS 55 from Lake Road in the city of Seymour to the Outagamie/Shawano County Line.

Length of project: 4.51 miles

Construction schedule:  30 working day contract to start in June 2018

Description of work:  The project includes milling and overlaying the roadway pavement, replacing culvert pipes, upgrading roadside barrier, installing centerline rumble strips, and new permanent signing.

Traffic impacts: WIS 55 will be closed and detoured for 10 days for culvert replacement. WIS 55 will remain open for resurfacing operations using flagging and lane closures to complete the work.

Detour: WIS 55 traffic will use County G to WIS 47 to WIS 156 and vice versa.

WIS 441/Fox River Bridge Painting

Location/limits: City of Appleton, Fox River Bridge

Length of project: 0.307 miles

Construction schedule: March 2018 to June 2019 (no construction during winter months)

Description of work: Repainting of structural steel on the WIS 441 bridge over the Fox River, WIS 96, and the railroad.

Traffic impacts: WIS 441 and WIS 96 will remain open to traffic throughout construction. Lane closures will be allowed on WIS 441 during off-peak hours. Shoulder closures on WIS 441 and WIS 96. During winter shutdown, all lanes and shoulders will be reopened to traffic.

SHAWANO COUNTY

 

WIS 29 Rehabilitation Project

Location/limits: Shawano County from Highline Road to the Shawano/Brown County line, includes work in the town of Angelica, town of Pittsfield, and village of Slab City.

Length of project: 13 miles

Construction schedule: June 2018 to November 2018

Description of work: Replacement of failing concrete pavement and repair of failing joints where the concrete is in poor condition, replace the shoulders with new pavement, install beamguard, signing, and pavement markings.

Traffic impacts: WIS 29 will remain open during construction. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction with reduced speeds. Temporary crossovers will be built to run traffic counter-directional on the west portion of the project.

WIS 23 Resurfacing

Location/limits: Division Road in town of Greenbush to County P in city of Plymouth  

Length of project in miles: 7.5 miles

Construction start/finish schedule:  25 working days anticipated to start in June 2018

Description of work:  Work consists of milling and resurfacing of asphaltic pavement surface, adding base aggregate to shoulders, adding centerline rumble strips, signing, pavement marking, and beamguard adjustments.

Traffic impacts: Single lane closures on WIS 23 with flagging operations. All lanes will remain open during holidays and large race events at Road America.

WIS 28 Resurfacing

Project Location/limits: WIS 28 from WIS 57 to Prange Road

Length of project: 8.6 miles

Construction schedule: Two-month construction in the July to October 2018 timeframe

Description of work: This pavement maintenance project primarily consists of milling 2” and paving 2” of asphaltic pavement along this stretch of WIS 28. The work will also include the addition of gravel to existing shoulders, beam guard repairs/replacements, isolated curb and gutter repairs, curb ramp repairs/replacements, and signing.

Traffic impacts: For approximately 3 weeks of the 2-month construction needed for this project, WIS 28 and WIS 32 will be detoured while repairs are made within the WIS 28/32 roundabout. WIS 28 will remain open to traffic during work outside the roundabout, with single lane closures and flagging operations.

Detour: The WIS 28 detour will follow I-43, County V, and WIS 57. The WIS 32 detour will follow WIS 23, I-43, and County V.

WIS 44 resurfacing

Location/limits: WIS 44 from south Fond du Lac/Winnebago County line to just south of WIS 91

Length of project: 9.85 miles

Construction schedule:  July 2018 to September 2018

Description of work: Mill and resurface of WIS 44 with gravel added to existing shoulders and permanent signing and pavement markings.

Traffic impacts: WIS 44 will remain open to traffic with single lane closures using flagging operations during daylight hours. No work allowed during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

WIS 116/East River Drive Omro Reconstruction

Location/limits: WIS 116 in city of Omro (West of Spruce Street to north city limits)

Length of project: 1.05 miles

Construction schedule:  March 2018 to October 2018

Description of work:  The project includes both an urban reconstruction and resurfacing of WIS 116 in Omro.

  • 0.57-mile urban reconstruction of WIS 116 (Spruce Street to Pine Street): Work includes new storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, sidewalks, traffic signals, street lighting, and incidentals.
  • 0.48-mile mill/resurface of WIS 116 (Pine Street to North City Limits): The existing gravel shoulders will be fully paved. The intersection of WIS 116/Fox Trail/Hawthorne Drive will be reconstructed to improve safety/sight distance.

Traffic impacts: WIS 116 between Spruce Street and the north city limits will be CLOSED and detoured during construction. Access to businesses and properties will be maintained. Driveway access may be restricted for a short period to allow the contractor to reconstruct the driveway and provide proper cure time for concrete. The contractor will provide a minimum of 48-hour notice prior to restricting driveway access. WIS 21 will be closed and detoured for a 30-day period (outside of school year) at the WIS 116/WIS 21/Spruce Street intersection. See project website for latest closures and traffic impacts.

WIS 116 (Main St.) Winneconne Reconstruction and Wolf River Bridge Replacement

Location/limits: WIS 116 (Main Street) in village of Winneconne from 2nd Street to 2nd Avenue

Length of project: Wolf River Bridge Replacement – 0.32 miles; Main Street Reconstruction – 1.32 miles

Construction schedule: 

Bridge construction: June 2017 to late 2018

Main Street reconstruction: March 2018 to late 2018

New fishing platforms construction: Late 2018 to fall 2019

  • Construction will be completed in six stages. Please see the project website for an extensive description of project construction stages.

Description of work: Replace the existing lift bridge with a new, high-level fixed bridge located immediately south of the existing bridge. Reconstruct roadway approaches between 2nd Street and 2nd Avenue and construct retaining walls on both sides to minimize the impacts to adjacent properties. Construct two new fishing platforms in the location of existing bridge that extend out approximately 230 feet from each river bank.

April 2018 to early June 2018

  • WIS 116 open to two-way traffic between 1st Street and 2nd Avenue.
    • WIS 116 may be restricted to one-lane during non-peak daytime hours using flagging operations but must be restored to full two-way operation during non-working hours.
  • WIS 116 closed from west village limits to 2nd Street, and from 2nd Avenue to east village limits for WIS 116 urban reconstruction project.

Early June 2018 to September 2018

  • WIS 116 open to two-way traffic between 1st Street and 2nd Avenue. WIS 116 may be restricted to one-lane during non-peak daytime hours using flagging operations. Roadway will be restored to full, two-way operation during non-working hours.
  • South 1st Street closed during this stage.
  • South 2nd Avenue closed for roughly 4 weeks during this stage.
  • WIS 116 remains closed from west village limits to 2nd Street and from 2nd Avenue to east village limits.

September 2018 to early November 2018

  • WIS 116 open to two-way traffic between 1st Street and 1st Avenue. Westbound traffic uses existing bridge and eastbound traffic uses new bridge.
  • Access across 1st Street closed during this stage.
  • Short-term closure of North 2nd Avenue.
  • WIS 116 remains closed from west village limits to 2nd Street and from 2nd Avenue to east village limits as part of separate project.

Early November 2018 to September 2019

  • WIS 116 open to two-way traffic on new bridge with flagging operations during construction of new fishing platforms.
  • Short-term closures of North 1st Street and North 1st Avenue.
  • WIS 116 open through remainder of village limits.

Detour: Posted detour follows US 45 to I-41 to WIS 21. WIS 116 bridge over Wolf River remains open for local traffic at all times.
