{"id":65,"date":"2015-03-18T15:02:27","date_gmt":"2015-03-18T20:02:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/projects.511wi.gov\/us12corridor\/?page_id=65"},"modified":"2015-03-18T15:04:37","modified_gmt":"2015-03-18T20:04:37","slug":"needpurpose","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/projects.511wi.gov\/us12corridor\/needpurpose\/","title":{"rendered":"Need\/Purpose"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Why is this project needed?<\/h3>\n<p>US 12 is a principal east-west connector route across south central Wisconsin and connects Dane and Sauk counties to the Interstate system.<\/p>\n<p>This section of US 12 serves as a prime tourism center with the various natural areas \u2013 Devil\u2019s Lake and Mirror Lake State Parks, the many attractions in Lake Delton, Baraboo and Wisconsin Dells area.<\/p>\n<p>US 12 is designated as a long-truck route in the National Highway System (NHS) and as a connector route in the Wisconsin Department of Transportation&#8217;s (WisDOT&#8217;s) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dot.wisconsin.gov\/projects\/state\/hwy2020.htm\">State Highway Plan 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Under the plan, connector routes are given higher priority funding since they connect major regions and economic centers.<\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"expressways\"><\/a>Expressways and freeways<\/h3>\n<p>Expressways and freeways are both multi-lane divided roadways. The difference lies in how vehicles gain access to these roadways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expressway<\/strong> has at-grade intersections at major roadways.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each intersection poses a higher risk to drivers crossing or turning onto US 12. At lower traffic volumes, these are typically very safe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Freeway<\/strong> only allows access at interchanges.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A freeway would improve safety for vehicles crossing or turning onto busier highways like US 12.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a name=\"intersections\"><\/a>Intersections and interchanges<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Intersection<\/strong> is where two roads meet at-grade<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interchange<\/strong> has on and off ramps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Project benefits<\/h3>\n<p>A safer and more efficient roadway between Lake Delton and the existing four lane roadway south of Baraboo.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of US 12 will be reconstructed from two lanes to four lanes to move traffic more efficiently, especially during the summer months when traffic volumes increase threefold.<\/p>\n<p>Safety will be improved by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Removing direct access to businesses\/homes along the freeway portion (From I-90\/94 heading south around Baraboo).<\/li>\n<li>Allowing access only at the following five interchanges:\n<ul>\n<li>Fern Dell Rd.<\/li>\n<li>North Reedsburg Rd.<\/li>\n<li>WIS 33<\/li>\n<li>WIS 136<\/li>\n<li>County W<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>South of Baraboo, the freeway will change to an expressway with limited access to some businesses\/homes and full access to the Lehman Rd. and Ski Hi Rd. intersections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why is this project needed?
