Maintenance is comprised of a wide range of activities to keep pavement, shoulders, slopes, drainage facilities, bridges, and all other structures and property within the existing state trunk highway system of roadways as near as possible to its as-constructed or renewed condition over the service life of the facility. Maintenance activities include pothole and pavement repair, guardrail\u00a0repair,\u00a0vegetation management, joint and crack\u00a0sealing, bridge inspections, and much, much more.<\/p>\n<p>WisDOT\u00a0contracts with the county highway departments for maintenance on state highways. This system of maintenance\u00a0was set up over 99 years ago. Legislative audits have shown that this arrangement is not only cost effective but in the best interest of the citizens of Wisconsin and the users of our state highway system.
