Project Overview

Upcoming traffic impacts for October 15 to October 21 *these closures are weather dependent and subject to change

  • FULL CLOSURE – Northbound I-43 between Arrowhead Road and Pebble Beach Road will be closed nightly, Monday through Wednesday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Detour: Northbound I-43 will exit at WIS 60, take WIS 60 west to County W, follow County W north to WIS 32/Spring Street to County LL and follow County LL north to WIS 32/Sauk Trail Road back to northbound I-43
    • Detour: Northbound I-43 traffic seeking WIS 57 should exit at WIS 60, take WIS 60 west to County W, follow County W north to WIS 57
  • FULL CLOSURE – Southbound I-43 between Pebble Beach Road and Arrowhead Road will be closed nightly, Thursday 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Sunday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Detour: Southbound I-43 will exit at WIS 32/Sauk Trail Road and follow County LL to WIS 32/Spring Street to County W to WIS 60 back to I-43
    • Detour: Southbound WIS 57 will exit at County W and follow it to WIS 60 back to I-43

Northbound and southbound I-43 between WIS 32/County V and northern Ozaukee County line will have daytime and nighttime single lane closures throughout the week.

  • FULL CLOSURE – Northbound I-43 between Arrowhead Road and Pebble Beach Road will be closed nightly, Monday through Wednesday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
    • Detour: Northbound I-43 will exit at WIS 60, take WIS 60 west to County W, follow County W north to WIS 32/Spring Street to County LL and follow County LL north to WIS 32/Sauk Trail Road back to northbound I-43.
    • Detour: Northbound I-43 traffic seeking WIS 57 should exit at WIS 60, take WIS 60 west to County W, and follow County W north to WIS 57.

Northbound and southbound I-43 between WIS 32/County V and the northern Ozaukee County line will have daytime and nighttime single lane closures throughout the week.

 

Project location/limits

I-43 Diamond Grind Project Location

I-43 from WIS 32 in Ozaukee County to the Ozaukee/Sheboygan County line (County K/Pebble Beach Road).

  • The project limits travel through the townships of Grafton, Port Washington, Belgium and Saukville, the villages of Grafton, Belgium, Saukville and Cedar Grove, and the city of Port Washington.

Project need/purpose

The purpose of the project is to provide preventative maintenance work on I-43 by grinding the pavement to improve the ride and to upgrade roadway elements to improve safety.

Project overview

  • Diamond grinding of the I-43 mainline and interchange ramps
  • Safety grading of maintenance crossovers
  • Repair the shoulder edge drops
  • Repair damaged beamguard
  • Install high-friction surface treatment at two curves
  • Replace signing and pavement markings

Construction schedule

  • Sunday, August 5 to mid/late October of 2018

Traffic impacts

  • Daily: There will be single-lane closures on both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-43 during non-peak AM and PM hours.
  • Nightly: One direction of the freeway will be CLOSED and DETOURED while crews conduct diamond grinding operations. A signed detour will be in place.
    • NOTE: Diamond grinding is a fairly mobile operation and the exact point of evening freeway closures will vary. Please refer to the 511 Wisconsin daily roadwork and closures list and select “Ozaukee County” and “I-43” in the roadwork/closures filter for daily closure conditions.

Detours

  • The I-43 detour will utilize the I-43/WIS 32 interchange (Sheboygan County), County LL,  and interchanges at County D, WIS 33, WIS 32 or WIS 60 in Ozaukee County, depending on where the diamond grind is taking place that night.
  • The WIS 57 detour will utilize the interchanges at WIS 60, WIS 32 or WIS 33, and County W.
