I-43/I-94 Valley Bridges

Milwaukee County

Project Overview

Purpose and Need

The Valley Bridge was initially constructed in 1967 and the concrete deck was replaced between 1988 and 1989. The decks were widened as part of the Marquette Interchange project completed in 2008. The southern portion of the bridge was overlaid in 2013. This project will overlay the northern section at the junction of the Marquette Interchange fly over ramps to complete the planned maintenance of the structure.

Early March – Late Summer/Early Fall 2018

Traffic Impacts

To safely implement these improvements while maximizing traffic flow, I-43 will be reduced to two (2) lanes in each direction along the bridge. The concrete overlays will also require some long term ramp closures within the Marquette Interchange. The following closures will occur during the project for varying durations:

  • I-43 North to I-794 East and Plankinton Avenue Exit Ramp CURRENTLY CLOSED
  • I-43 North to I-94 West
  • I-43 North to 10th Street and Michigan Avenue Exit Ramp
  • 11th Street and Wisconsin Avenue On Ramp to I-43 South CURRENTLY CLOSED
  • I-94 East to I-43 South CURRENTLY CLOSED
  • I-794 West to I-43 South CURRENTLY CLOSED
  • Mineral Street/National Avenue On Ramp to I-43 North – CURRENTLY CLOSED

Project goals

WisDOT’s project team will implement a coordinated set of strategies to achieve the work zone mobility, efficiency, and safety objectives of the project:

  • Safety: Improve work zone safety for workers and traveling public
  • Mobility: Minimize travel delay through the work zone
  • Efficiency: Compressed construction schedule to minimize duration of the lane closures
  • Communication: Communicate impacts clearly to stakeholders, media, businesses, special events venues and elected officials
  • Coordination with other adjacent projects
