7/1/2019- July Fourth holiday travel

Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are asking July Fourth holiday travelers to buckle up, stay alert, and expect slower traffic in work zones and along major travel corridors. Peak travel times are expected between noon and 8 p.m. on Wednesday (July 3) and Sunday (July 7). Construction in most highway work zones will stop by noon on Wednesday (July 3) and will not resume until 6 a.m. on Monday, July 8.

While workers will open as many highway lanes as possible, motorists still need to be patient, alert and watch their speed. The Wisconsin State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies will be keeping an eye on traffic and assisting stranded motorists. Important safety tips for travelers:

  • Slow down. Excessive speed is a major factor in traffic crashes. Last year in Wisconsin, there were nearly 20,000 speed-related crashes resulting in 7,957 injuries and 173 fatalities.
  • Eliminate distractions and focus on the road ahead. Texting while driving is prohibited and very dangerous. Drivers in Wisconsin are also prohibited from using a handheld mobile device in work zones (except in an emergency).
  • Move Over or slow down when approaching emergency responders such as police and fire vehicles, ambulances, tow trucks and highway maintenance vehicles that are stopped along a highway with their warning lights flashing.
  • Properly secure trailers and cargo. If your vehicle breaks down, try to get safely off the highway. Remain buckled up inside your vehicle and wait for help to arrive.

Motorists are reminded that the I-94 North-South corridor project has a reduced speed of 60 m.p.h.

6/20/2019- WisDOT bid letting opportunities

The next Wisconn Valley road projects are scheduled to be let July 9, 2019. Visit HERE for more information.

5/24/2019-Memorial Day travelers asked to plan ahead, buckle up, be patient and safe.

While most highway construction is put on hold, motorists will likely encounter work zones requiring reduced speed and extra caution.

WisDOT and its Division of State Patrol are asking Memorial Day weekend travelers to plan ahead, buckle up, expect slower traffic in work zones and along major travel corridors.

Peak travel times are expected to occur between noon and 8 p.m. on Friday (May 24) and Monday (May 27). Construction in most highway work zones will stop by noon on Friday (May 24) and will not resume until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28. While workers will open as many lanes as possible, motorists still need to be patient, alert and watch their speed.

“The State Patrol and other police agencies will be out enforcing traffic laws and assisting stranded motorists, but ultimately, safety along our highways is in the hands of responsible drivers,” WisDOT Secretary-designee Craig Thompson said.

To help prevent traffic deaths and injuries, law enforcement agencies across Wisconsin are participating in the Click It or Ticket seat belt mobilization that continues through June 2. Other important traffic safety reminders:

  • Slow down. Posted speed limits apply to ideal travel conditions. Drivers are required to travel at a “reasonable and prudent” speed based on weather and traffic conditions.
  • Eliminate distractions and focus on what’s ahead. Texting while driving is prohibited and very dangerous. It is also illegal in Wisconsin for drivers to use a handheld mobile device in work zones (except in an emergency).
  • Be prepared to move over or slow down when approaching emergency responders including police and fire vehicles, ambulances, tow trucks and highway maintenance vehicles that are stopped along a highway with their warning lights flashing. If your vehicle breaks down, try to get safely off the highway, remain buckled up and wait for help to arrive.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s (WisDOT) I-94 North-South project team will be lowering the speed limit on I-94 between County G in Racine and WIS 142 in Kenosha County. The new speed limit which will be 60 mph will only impact the southbound traffic. Northbound I-94 will remain at 70 mph until traffic is switched over to allow work to begin rebuilding and adding capacity to the northbound lanes. The work on that portion of the project could begin as soon as this June.

The decision to reduce the speed limit is linked to the progress of the I-94 prep contract work which is nearing completion. Motorists will also see an increase of barrier wall along the southern portion of the work zone. The new signs will be posted overnight tonight and will be fully in place by 5:30 a.m.
