Location

Construction schedule

  • Work will begin Monday, March 27 and finish in fall of 2024.

Project improvements

This is a resurfacing-level improvement that includes:

  • Milling 2″ of the existing pavement and 4″ of cold-in-place asphalt followed by a 2 ½ inch asphalt pavement overlay.
  • Widening paved shoulder from 3′ to 5′
  • Centerline and shoulder rumble strips
  • Beam guard removal/replacements and slope improvements
  • Box culvert and pipe culvert replacement
  • Culvert cleaning
  • Replacement of small sections of curb and gutter
  • Pavement marking

The exhibit below shows locations of structure work for guard rail, culvert repair/replacement and box culvert replacements.

Project benefits

The existing pavement surface and numerous structures are deteriorating at numerous locations. Improvements will reduce surface roughness and provide a smoother ride for motorists. Improvements will also extend the life of the pavement structure while reducing future maintenance costs. Repair and replacement of culverts will help to ensure adequate drainage to mitigate possible flooding. Rumble strips will help to alert errant vehicles leaving the lane of travel, and wider shoulders will help to provide enhanced opportunity to correct vehicles back into the travel lane. Upgrades to pedestrian curb ramps, new beam guard, and new pavement markings will help to provide safer travel for motorists and pedestrians.

Traffic impacts in 2023

WIS 42 will be closed and detoured using two different detour routes for culvert work. The closures will not be concurrent. Access to properties in the closed section of WIS 42 will be maintained at all times.

  • North stage closure – March 29, 2023 to May 12, 2023: WIS 42 will be closed and detoured between County V and County BB.
  • Early June 2023 to mid/late June 2023: WIS 42 will reclose the north stage to thru traffic from County V to County BB. Access to all commercial, private, and field entrances will be maintained for local residents, businesses, and emergency vehicles.
  • South stage closure – Early/mid-June, 2023 to July 24, 2023: WIS 41 will be closed and detoured between 35th Place and County V.
  • WIS 42 will be open with flagging operations after the south stage closure for all remaining construction in 2023 and 2024.

Temporary business signing and business resources

Temporary business signing may be placed during the detoured portion of the project by filling out a WisDOT business signing permit. All temporary business signing needs approval via the permit before placement to ensure it is in a safe location and does not pose a visual distraction or traffic hazard. The temporary business signing permit is free Costs associated with creating the temporary sign are the responsibility of the business. The permit is available as a fillable-form WORD document or pdf below, or you can request one from the project contacts below.
