Alternatives considered
Several alternatives were considered to address safety and operational concerns westbound on I-94/I-794. View exhibit.
Alternative 1: Channelization
- Reinforce current pavement marking and configuration on I-794
- Prevent queue jumping to reduce friction and turbulence through the Marquette Interchange
- Does not show any significant operational improvements
Alternative 2: Original Marquette Interchange Configuration
- Restore two lanes on I-794
- Re-establish forced merge of I-94 and I-43
- Presents safety concerns due to forced merge
- Does not address poor traffic operations and peak hour congestion
Alternative 3: Inside Merge
- Maintain single lane on I-794
- Merge 11th Street on-ramp with I-94 system ramp
- Presents safety concerns due to left-hand forced merge within the system interchange
- Does not show any significant operational improvements
Alternative 4: I-794 Left Lane Drop
- Restore two lanes on I-794
- Drop and merge left lane at approximately 25th Street
- Presents safety concerns due to left-hand forced merge occurring simultaneously with right lane drop
- Shows some operational improvements
Alternative 5: 25th Street Gore Relocation
- Restore two lanes on I-794
- Re-establish forced merge of I-94 and I-43
- Relocate 25th Street gore to system ramp merge to prevent I-794 traffic from exiting at 25th Street
- Presents safety concerns due to forced merge
- Shows some operational improvements
Alternative 6: Auxiliary Lane/Preferred Alternative
- Restore two lanes on I-794
- Maintain single lanes for I-94 and I-43
- Extend auxiliary lane from 25th Street to 35th Street to reduce merging and weaving on I-94
- Shows significant operational improvements
