Project overview

This four-mile project will rehabilitate bridges both on and over I-43 in Milwaukee County,from Howard Avenue (just north of the Mitchell Interchange) to the Valley Bridge (just south of the Marquette Interchange).

This stretch of I-43 serves as an important link between the Mitchell Interchange and Marquette Interchange, and is a major regional route for tourism, special events, and commerce. Bridge rehabilitation work is required in this area so this vital link can be maintained, especially in advance of upcoming construction on the Zoo Interchange and Hoan Bridge projects.

This project will rehabilitate 13 bridges on and over I-43 from Howard Avenue to the Valley Bridge in Milwaukee County, including bridge deck overlays/replacements, bridge repair and painting.

We ask for your patience as we undertake several large infrastructure improvement projects planned in this area over the next two years. WisDOT has plans to improve traffic flow on I-794/I-94 westbound in the Marquette Interchange in early spring 2013 and the Hoan Bridge in fall 2013. We also intend to begin preliminary work on the Hoan Bridge.

Mid - February 2013

• Outside lane closures; maintain traffic on two innermost lanes  (I-43 NB Howard to Marquette Interchange, I-43 SB Becher St to Howard Ave)

• Northbound I-43 from Holt Ave & Howard Ave entrance ramp closed

• Southbound I-43 to Holt Ave exit ramp closed

• Northbound I-43 from Mineral/Walker St entrance ramp closed

• Northbound I-43 to National Ave exit ramp closed

Late spring 2013 – June 23, 2013 (Summerfest)

• Inside lane closures; maintain traffic on two outermost lanes  (I-43 NB/SB Howard Avenue to Marquette Interchange)

• Westbound I-794 to southbound I-43/94 system ramp closed

• Northbound and southbound I-43 from W. Mineral Street closed

• Southbound I-43 to National Ave/6^th Street closed

• Northbound I-43 from Howard Avenue entrance ramp closed

• Southbound I-43 to Holt Avenue eastbound exit ramp closed (Holt Avenue westbound exit ramp open)

June 23, 2013 (Summerfest)– August 28, 2013 (Harley Anniversary/Labor Day Weekend)

• Outside lane closures; maintain traffic on two innermost lanes  (I-43 SB Marquette Interchange to Greenfield Avenue)

• Westbound I-794 to southbound I-43/94 system ramp closed

• Southbound I-43 from W. Mineral Street closed

Fall 2013

•   No lane or ramp closures during peak hours

•  Temporary ramp closures allowed during off-peak and nighttime hours
